Species: Asterocampa celtis, Hackberry Emperor

Description: 1 7/8 - 2 1/2" wingspan; extremely variable geographically; upperside is reddish brown; forewing has 1 submarginal eyespot, a jagged row of white spots, and the cell has 1 solid black bar and 2 separate black spots

Habitat: Wooded streams, forest grassy areas, urban areas

Range: southern Ontario west to southern New England, south into northern Mexico

Host/Food Plant: Hackberry, Sugarberry (Celtis spp.)
