Description: 1 - 13/8" wingspan; male above, tawny-orange with large square black stigma (scent gland); female above, brown with a pair of bright spots below forewing cell, square transparent spot at end of forewing cell; below, forewing tawny-orange, short black bar from base, yellow-orange disk; hindwing dull yellow, band of paler spots
Habitat: Pastures, fields, urban areas, lawns, gardens
Range: southern US into Mexico, emigrates north into North Dakota, Michigan, Pennsylvania
