Species: Terrepene carolina carolina, Eastern Box Turtle
Description: 4.5" - 6"; domelike shell, variable coloration and patterning
Habitat: Woodlands, meadows. 3-6 eggs per clutch laid in excavated cavities in the soil.
Range: Maine to Florida, west to Michigan, Illinois, eastern Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas.
Food: Various plant, fungi and animal material.
Status: Declining; taken as pets, killed by vehicles, lawn mowers.
