Swallowtail Butterflies


Species: Eurytides marcelluss, Zebra Swallowtail

Description: 2 1/4 to 3 1/2" wingspan. At base of hindwing there are 2 blue spots and 2 scarlet spots which are closer to body.

Habitat: Woodland streams, shrub borders, meadows

Range: Lake States and Ontario east to southern New England, south to central Florida, west to eastern Great Plains. Usually occurs in areas near pawpaw trees.

Host/Food Plant: Asimina triloba (Pawpaw), Asimina parviflora (Dwarf Pawpaw)

Status: Not of concern, but unable to adapt to suburban and countryside development.
