Species: Hylephila phyleus, Fiery Skipper

Description: 1 - 1 1/4" wingspan. Short antennae. Male: above, yellow-orange Wings; outer margins black and toothed; forewing with wide black stigma. Underside of the hindwing yellow-orange with small brown or black spots. Female: above, dark brown with an irregular orange band. Underside of hindwing pale brown with light spots.

Habitat: Lawns, clearings, grassy lowlands

Range: California east to New Mexico, north to Illinois, Michigan, and Connecticut; throughout southeast and southwest; not in Rockies or Great Basin; south to Chile
